Getting Your Teaching Degree

Last updated 3 months ago

There are few professional opportunities more rewarding than the chance to shape young minds as an educator or school principal. In order to become an instructor in elementary or secondary education, many states require that you have a master’s degree in education or that you be actively pursuing such a degree.

Goals of a Master’s in Education

There are three primary goals of the MED program:

1.      Provide and shape the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively lead, teach, and continue professional growth.

2.      Combine theory with classroom experience to explore new ways of teaching and improving individual techniques.

3.      Utilize the latest educational research and data to constantly improve the classroom experience and provide enriching education to all students.

Master’s in Education Program

There are three tracks for the MED—initial teacher certification, professional certification on an administrative level, and enhancing professional skills in the field of education and human services. Each of these tracks consists of 36 semester credit hours with a core and specialization based on your individual goals as an educator. Core classes will cover educational theory and leadership development, while specialization courses will focus on your area of academic curriculum.

Student Teaching

This level of your graduate studies is an integral piece of your professional growth, as it allows you to be introduced to the classroom where your new skills and knowledge can be put to use under the supervision of an experienced teacher. During the time you are involved in student teaching, your top priority will be the students in your classroom. Therefore, you should limit outside activities so that you can make the most out of the 12-week program.
